So, you've had your precious little one.

You've made it home from the hospital. You're keeping a tiny human alive. You're sleep deprived. You're managing a household—or at least giving it your best attempt. Maybe you're wondering when you last washed your hair and how it's somehow already time to feed the baby again.

Or...

You're living your best life. You've never felt more alive. Your cup is full, and you're soaking in every bit of this sweet newborn season.

Maybe you're somewhere in between.

Whichever one sounds most like you, it's beautiful because it's authentic to your experience.

And somewhere in the middle of all of this, you know how quickly these days are going to pass. You want photographs of the tiny fingers and toes, the way your baby fits against your chest, the sleepy expressions and the way your family looks in this particular moment.

So now there's another decision to make:

Should you choose an in-home newborn session or a studio newborn session?

I offer both in-home and studio newborn photography for families in Carmel, Indianapolis and the surrounding areas, and there are things I genuinely love about each. The right choice really comes down to the experience and finished images you envision for your family.

The In-Home Newborn Experience

There is something incredibly special about photographing a newborn in the place where your family's story is actually unfolding.

Your baby's nursery. The bed where you've spent countless hours feeding and snuggling. The couch where big brother climbs up beside you. Even the little details of your home become part of the story of this season.

Why you might love an in-home session

Perhaps the biggest advantage is simply not having to go anywhere.

There is no rushing everyone out the door or worrying about arriving somewhere at exactly the right time. I come to you with the lighting, newborn pieces and other things we'll need for your session.

In-home sessions also allow us to work completely around your baby. Newborns need to eat. Diapers need to be changed. Someone will inevitably need a break—and that's okay. We have the freedom to stop when your baby needs us to.

It's also wonderful when there are older siblings involved. Once we've finished the photographs that include them, they're free to grab a snack, play in their room or simply be done. Dad gets the same luxury. Once we've finished the photographs that involve him, there's no requirement that he sit beside us for the remainder of the session. 😉

That freedom allows the session to feel relaxed rather than like we're racing against a clock.

What should you consider?

The biggest variable with an in-home session is the home itself.

Not every room photographs equally well, and sometimes we need to be creative about where we work. I look for areas that give us the light, space and visual simplicity we need, and I bring professional lighting when needed rather than depending entirely on the natural light in your home.

And your house does not need to look like it belongs in a magazine.

Before your session, I'll help you determine which areas will work best. Often we need far less space than you might imagine, and a little preparation can transform a very ordinary corner of your home into a beautiful setting for your photographs.

The Studio Newborn Experience

For some families, home is where they want to live this season—but not necessarily where they want to photograph it.

That's where the studio can be wonderful.

Why you might love a studio session

The biggest advantage of the studio is that the environment has already been taken care of for you.

The studio space available in Fortville offers a soft, neutral and intentionally styled setting for families who prefer a curated environment for their photographs.

If you're drawn to clean, beautifully curated imagery and love the idea of arriving to a space that's already prepared for your photographs, the studio may be exactly what you want.

It's also a lovely choice if you'd simply feel more relaxed knowing that the visual environment is completely handled before you arrive.

What should you consider?

Unlike an in-home session, studio time is reserved for a specific window. That means arriving on time is important, and we don't have quite the same unlimited flexibility that we have when photographing in your home.

Studio newborn sessions include two hours of photography time, which gives us room for normal newborn needs such as feeding, changing and soothing.

Additional studio time can also be reserved if desired.

Families with older children should also consider what they'll do once sibling photographs are complete. Because we're working in a rented studio filled with furniture and equipment, young siblings can't independently roam the space in the same way they can at home. Depending on your family, it may work best for Dad or another caregiver to take them elsewhere once we've finished their portion of the session.

Finally, studio sessions do carry an additional cost because the space is privately reserved for your family. Studio sessions are currently available for an additional $275, subject to studio availability.

So...which should you choose?

There really isn't a wrong answer.

Choose in-home if what sounds wonderful to you is staying put, moving slowly, allowing siblings to come and go, and having your actual home become part of your baby's story.

Choose studio if you love the idea of walking into a beautiful space that's already prepared for photographs and you're drawn to the simplicity and consistency of a curated environment.

Either way, the most important part isn't the room we're standing in.

It's the tiny hand wrapped around your finger. The way your baby disappears against Dad's chest. The little toes that will somehow be twice this size before you're ready. The way your older child looks at this brand-new person who has suddenly joined the family.

The setting simply determines how you want that story to be told.

Whether we tell it in the home where these first days are unfolding or in a quiet, beautiful studio, my goal is the same: to create photographs that allow you to remember not only what your family looked like during this season, but what it felt like to be there.

The setting simply determines how you want that story to be told.
